Here’s what we did for Fun Friday on June 25

The Story

The book was I Went Walking by Sue Williams.

The Song

Pretend that we’re little frogs,
Hopping, hopping, hopping!
Pretend that we’re little frogs,
Hopping, hopping, hopping!
Pretend that we’re little fish,
Swimming, swimming, swimming!
Pretend that we’re little fish,
Swimming, swimming, swimming!
Pretend that we’re little birds,
Flying, flying, flying!
Pretend that we’re little birds,
Flying, flying, flying!
Pretend that we’re little bees,
Buzzing, buzzing, buzzing!
Pretend that we’re little bees,
Buzzing, buzzing, buzzing!
Pretend that we’re little babes,
Sleeping, sleeping, sleeping!
Pretend that we’re little babes,
Sleeping, sleeping, sleeping!
Shhhhhhhhhh!

The Craft: Binoculars/Telescope

What you’ll need:

  • 1 paper towel cardboard roll or 2 toilet paper rolls
  • Small squares of colored tissue paper, construction paper, or wrapping paper
  • Ribbon, yarn or string
  • Hole punch
  • Stapler or tape
  • Scissors
  • White craft glue
  • Glue stick

How to make it: Glue the small squares of colored paper onto the outside of the cardboard tube(s). (For younger children you can use a solid piece of paper and tape it around the tube.)

If making binoculars, staple or tape the 2 tubes together side by side.

Punch a hole on the outside of each tube.  Tie the end of a string in each hole to form a strap.

Here’s what we did for Fun Friday on June 18

The Story

The book was Biscuit Loves Father’s Day by Alyssa Satin Capucilli.

The Song

I Love Daddy to the Tune of “Frere Jacques”
I Love Daddy, I Love Daddy,
Yes, I do, yes, I do.
Daddy’s are for hugging,
(Hug self)
Daddy’s are for kissing,
(Blow a kiss)
I love you, yes I do.

The Craft: Father’s Day card – Dad, You’re Worth Every Penny Card

What you’ll need:

  • 1 sheet construction paper (cardboard optional)
  • 9 shiny pennies or  penny stickers
  • Marker or Crayon
  • Scissors
  • White craft glue
  • Glue stick

How to make it: Fold the construction paper in half like a greeting card.  (see Tips if using real pennies)
Use Marker or crayon to write “DAD” across the front of the card, leaving about 1.5″ space underneath.
Use white craft glue to attach a penny to each corner of the D’s, where the curve meets straight lines, and at the center of the curve. Glue a penny to the top of the letter A, and two at the bottom.
Write, “You’re worth every penny!” underneath “DAD” with marker or crayon.

Tips: The real pennies add quite a bit of weight to this card, so even card stock or poster board is not sturdy enough, be sure to glue cardboard to the back of your construction paper or your card will not stand freely.
For a lightweight card, make photocopies of the pennies and cut them out and glue them on, or use stickers of pennies (found at Learning Post) instead of the real pennies.

Here’s what we did for Fun Friday on June 11

The Story

The book was The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and THE BIG HUNGRY BEAR by Don and Audrey Wood

The Song

I Am a Strawberry
I am a strawberry,
Red and sweet.
See all my seeds
And my cap so neat.
When I grow ripe
And ready to eat,
Pop off my cap –
A tasty treat!

The Craft: Strawberry Mask

Cut a paper plate into a strawberry shape.  Have the child paint the plate red.  For younger children – color the shape with a red crayon or marker.  Draw seeds on the strawberry using a black marker or crayon.  Glue strips of green tissue paper along the top edge of the strawberry to represent the cap.  To finish the mask cut eye holes and attach a wide craft stick to the back.

Here’s what we did for Fun Friday on June 4

The Story

The book was The Big Wide-Mouthed Frog by Ana Martin Larranaga

The Fingerplay

Five Little Frogs

Five little frogs sitting on a well.
(Hold up five fingers.)

One peeked in and down he fell.
(Hold up one finger.)

Four frogs jumped high.
(With hand holding up 4 fingers, jump up.)

Four frogs jumped low.
(With hand holding up 4 fingers, jump low.)

Four frogs jumped everywhere, to and fro!
(With both hands jump forward, sideways, backwards.)

Continue until none are left.

The Craft: Frog Puppet

To make the frog’s body, paint both sides of a dessert-size paper plate green. When it’s thoroughly dry, fold the plate in half and use a utility knife (parents only) to make a 1-inch slit (for the frog’s tongue) in the center of the fold. Create a finger hold on the underside of the body using a 2-by-3-inch piece of green construction paper. Center it on the bottom of the folded plate and tape the shorter edges in place. For the eyes, cut out a pair of 1-by-2-inch green rectangles and round the upper edges. Fold each rectangle in half and glue the lower portion to the top of the body. Glue on white and black paper circles or wiggle eyes.

Now, cut frog legs out of construction paper, a shorter set for the front and a long, bent pair for the back. Tape the tops of the legs to the underside of the body. Finally, cut out a 3/4-by-7-inch tongue from red construction paper. Round one end and slip it through the slit. To wag the frog’s tongue, jiggle the straight end.

Here’s what we did for Fun Friday on May 28

The Story

The book was Sea, Sand, Me! By: Patricia Hubbell

The Fingerplay

Ocean Waves

I went to the ocean
(Point to self.)

To see the waves there.
(Move arms to resemble waves.)

The wind blew gently
(Wiggle fingers.)

And ruffled my hair.
(Move fingers thru hair.)

I scooped up some sand
(Pretend to scoop sand.)

And packed it really tight.
(Squeeze the pretend sand.)

Then I made a sand castle.
(Pat the floor as if patting the sand.)

What a beautiful sight!
(Throw out arms.)

The Craft

Purchase foam visors from your local craft store. You can let your child decorate them with foam sticker, glitter glue, or foam paint.

We are talking about going to the beach so we are going to use ocean themed foam stickers to decorate our visors.
