Sunday, March 27th, 2011

Here’s what we did for Fun Friday on March 25th.

The Story

The book was Rain by Manya Stojic

The Songs

If It’s Windy
Sing to the tune “If You’re Happy and You Know It”

If it’s windy and you know it swing and sway.
If it’s windy and you know it swing and sway.
If it’s windy and you know it,
Then your clothes will surely show it.
If it’s windy and you know it, swing and sway.

If it’s sunny and you know it, then go play.
If it’s sunny and you know it, then go play.
If it’s sunny and you know it,
Then your clothes will surely show it.
If it’s sunny and you know it, then go play.

If it’s rainy and you know it, splash about.
If it’s rainy and you know it, splash about.
If it’s rainy and you know it,
Then your clothes will surely show it.
If it’s rainy and you know it, splash about.

If it’s snowy and you know it, stomp around.
If it’s snowy and you know it, stomp around.
If it’s snowy and you know it,
Then your clothes will surely show it.
If it’s snowy and you know it, stomp around.

Weather Dance
Sing to the tune “Frere Jacques”

It is snowing, it is snowing
Falling down, falling down.
Gently, gently floating,
Gently, gently floating,
To the ground, to the ground.

It is raining, it is raining
Falling down, falling down.
Pitter, pitter, patter,
Pitter, pitter, patter,
Splashing down, on the ground.

It is windy, it is windy,
Watch it blow, watch it bow
Twirling round and round,
Jumping ‘cross the ground,
See it blow, to and fro.

It is sunny, it is sunny,
All around, all around,
Spreading lots of sunshine,

Making shadows sometimes,
On the ground, on the ground.

The Craft: Rain Stick

What you’ll need:

  • Paper towel tube
  • Crayons, markers, or stickers
  • Aluminum Foil
  • Small dried beans, lentils, or rice.
  • Poster board
  • Tape

How to make it:

Cut two circles sized to fit over the ends of a paper towel tube from the poster board. Tape one circle to one end of the tube. Then decorate the tube with crayons, markers, or stickers. Roll or crumple a large piece of aluminum foil; then twist it into a spiral shape and fit it inside the tube. (Be sure to use enough foil to reach both ends of the tube.) Pour in a quarter cup of small dried beans, lentils, or rice. Then tape the second tag board circle to the open end of the tube. Flip the stick from end to end to hear the sound of falling rain!

We are doing something a little different for the upcoming Fun Fridays in March! Melissa Wardell will be leading Fun Friday on March 11th and 18th and will be incorporating baby sign language with the story telling and singing.

Please join Melissa Wardell with My Smart Hands of Des Moines for storytime on March 11 and 18!

We’ll read books, sing songs, and learn American Sign Language! Be sure to bring your favorite Teddy Bear on March 11 as we sing, sign, and read about bears!

Then on March 18, wear your favorite color and join us to sing, sign, and read about the colors of the rainbow!

About My Smart Hands

My Smart Hands – Des Moines offers two levels of baby sign language classes for parents and children! Level 1 is for parents and children new to signing. Participants learn over 100 signs, the manual alphabet, 13 songs, and several favorite children’s books. Level 2 is for families who have completed Level 1 or who have had experience with signing. Participants learn over 120 signs, continue to practice the manual alphabet, add more signs to the songs they learned in Level 1, learn new songs, and read and sign more books.
