Fun Friday StoryTime + Craft: From Caterpillar to Butterfly by Deborah Heiligman and Caterpillar Craft

Friday, June 10th, 2011

Here’s what we did today for Fun Friday on June 10th. We had lots of fun this morning!

The Story

The book was From Caterpillar to Butterfly by Deborah Heiligman.

The songs

Fuzzy Caterpillar
Fuzzy caterpillar,
(wiggle both index fingers)
Wiggled up a tree.
(Wiggle them up to the air)
He wiggled long, wiggled short, then wiggled right at me.
(Wiggle fingers arms outstretched, then 6 inches apart, then close to your face)
Hi there!
(Wave hello)
I put him in a box.
(Clap hands together)
Don’t go away I said.
(Shake finger)
But when I opened up the box,
(open hands slowly)
There was a butterfly!
(Cross hands at wrists and “flutter” your butterfly)

Tiny Caterpillar (If you’re Happy and You Know It)
There’s a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle,
there’s a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle,
there’s a tiny caterpillar, a tiny caterpillar, a tiny caterpillar on a leaf, wiggle, wiggle.
There’s a big fat caterpillar on a leaf, munch, munch,
There’s a big fat caterpillar on a leaf, munch, munch,
There’s a big fat caterpillar, a big fat caterpillar, a big fat caterpillar on a leaf, munch, munch.
There’s a pretty butterfly flying around, flutter, flutter
There’s a pretty butterfly flying around, flutter, flutter.
There’s a pretty butterfly, a pretty butterfly, a pretty butterfly flying around, flutter, flutter.

Caterpillar (Wheels on the Bus melody)
The caterpillars are wriggling around, wriggling around, wriggling around.
The caterpillars are wriggling around, all over the yard.
The caterpillars are building a cocoon, building a cocoon, building a cocoon.
The caterpillars are building a cocoon all around the yard.
The butterflies are flying around, flying around, flying around.
The butterflies are flying around all around the yard.

The Craft

Supplies needed:

  • Construction paper – any colors
  • Shoe strings, ribbon or string (36 inches long)
  • Uncooked rigatoni
  • Two 3 inch pieces of ribbon or small pieces of construction paper
  • Pencil or small hole punch
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Crayons or markers

Instructions:

  1. Cut circles from construction paper. You will need 8 circles of the same size. You can trace around a small paper cup or round lid. The size of your circles determines the size of your caterpillar.
  2. Punch a hole in the center of each circle using a pencil or hole punch.
  3. Draw eyes and mouth on one of the circles. This circle will be the head.
  4. Thread the head circle on the shoe string followed by a rigatoni. Continue the pattern until you have used all of the circles. Add the ribbon strips to make the antennae on the head circle.
  5. Tie the ends of the shoe string together to form your necklace.

Options: You can add pipe cleaner or construction paper legs to your caterpillar. For the eyes you can use wiggle eyes or brads. Be creative and make your caterpillar your own.

But!
We all know frogs go, Lahdeedahdeedah!
We all know frogs go, Lahdeedahdeedah!
We all know frogs go, Lahdeedahdeedah!
They don’t go Mm, Mm, Aahh!

Little birdie in your nest.
Little birdie it’s time to rest.
When the sun comes out to play,
little birdie – fly away!

From the book and I Heard Said the Bird by Polly Berrien Berends

To the Tune of I’m a Little Teapot
I’m a little birdie
Cute and fat.
I eat worms.
I don’t like cats.
When I see a cat come out to play,
I spread my wings,
And I fly away!

Little bird, little bird,
Fly around,
Up to the sky,
Down to the ground.
Little bird, little bird,
Flap your wings.
Open your beak
and sweetly sing.
Little bird, little bird,
Fly to your nest.
Now it is time
to take a rest.
