and I Can’t Get My Turtle to Move by Elizabeth Lee O’Donnell

The Songs and Fingerplays

MY LITTLE TURTLE

This is my little turtle.

He lives alone in a shell.

He likes his little home.

He thinks it’s really swell.
He pokes out his head

When he wants to eat.

Then he pulls it back in.

TURTLES EVERYWHERE

Tune: “On Top of Old Smokey”
Some turtles swim over the ocean.

Some turtles swim over the sea.

Some turtles grow very big

As big as you and me.
Turtles, turtles, swimming here and there.

Turtles, turtles, turtles everywhere.

Tiny Tim the Turtle
I had a little turtle, his name was Tiny Tim

I put him in the bathtub, to see if he could swim

He drank up all the water, he ate up all the soap

and now he’s sick in bed with a bubble in his throat hiccup

A Little Turtle
There was a little turtle
He lived in a box
He swam in a puddle
He climbed on the rocks
He snapped at a mosquito
He snapped at a flea
He snapped at a minnow
He snapped at me
He caught the mosquito
He caught the flea
He caught the minnow
But he didn’t catch me

and Bingo was his name-o.

(Repeat, replacing one letter with a clap each time.)

Over in the Barnyard (Tune: “Down By the Station”)

Over in the barnyard

Early in the morning

See the yellow chickies

Standing in a row

See the busy farmer

Giving them their breakfas
t
Cheep, cheep, cheep, cheep

Off they go
[pink piggies and spotted cows]

Two Mother Pigs

Two mother pigs lived in a pen (show thumbs)

Each had four babies, and that made ten (show fingers & thumbs)

These four babies were black as night (thumb in palm, wiggle fingers)

These four babies were black and white (switch hands, repeat)

But all eight babies loved to play

And they rolled and rolled in the mud all day (roll hands)

At night, with their mother, they curled up in a heap (clasp hands)

And squealed and squealed till they fell fast asleep.

The Craft: Sheep

What you’ll need:

  • White and black construction paper
  • Cotton balls
  • Glue
  • Scissors
  • White crayon
  • 2 googly eyes
  • Red yarn
  • Sheep template (template 1 and template 2)

How to make your cotton ball sheep craft:

  2. Cover the sheep’s body piece with glue.
  3. Stick the 4 legs onto the bottom of the body.
  4. Cover the rest of the sheep with cotton balls.
  5. Glue the sheep’s head onto the body (on top of the cotton balls).
  6. Glue the googly eyes on the head. Glue the red yarn on the sheep’s face to make a smiling mouth.
  7. Cut a small triangle out of black construction paper and glue it to the face as a nose.
