Fun Friday: Bear feels sick

Saturday, February 18th, 2012

Here’s what we did for Fun Friday on February 17th.

The Stories

Bear Feels Sick by Karma Wilson

If Beaver Had A Fever by Helen Ketteman

The Songs and Fingerplays

Ten Fingers

I have ten fingers hold up both hands, fingers spread

And they all belong to me,  point to self

I can make them do things-

Would you like to see?

I can shut them up tight   make fists

I can open them wide    open hands

I can put them together   place palms together

I can make them all hide   put hands behind back
I can make them jump high   hands over head

I can make them jump low   touch floor

I can fold them up quietly   fold hands in lap

And hold them just so.

Two Little Feet
Two little feet go stamp, stamp, stamp
Two little hands go clap, clap, clap
One little body stands up straight
One little body goes round and round
One little body sits quietly down.

Fun Friday: Valentine Mouse

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Here’s what we did for Fun Friday on February 10th.

The Stories

What Is Valentine’s Day? By Harriet Ziefert

The Biggest Valentine Ever by Steven Kroll

Mouse’s First Valentine by Lauren Thompson

The Songs and Fingerplays

Valentine Rhyme
I put my hands together, this is how I start; I curve my fingers right around and I can make a heart!

Will You Be My Valentine? (London Bridge)
Will you be my valentine, valentine, valentine?
Will you be my valentine? Be a friend of mine

Valentine for you (Farmer in the Dell)
A valentine for you.
A valentine for you
A valentine, a valentine
A valentine for you.

Crafts: Valentine Mouse

What you’ll need:

  • Construction Paper
  • Wiggle Eyes
  • Yarn
  • Pom-pom
  • Crayons, markers, glue stick, and scissors

Instructions:
Start out by cutting out the hearts you will need to make the mouse. You will need one large heart for the body, a smaller heart for the head, and two even smaller hearts for the mouse’s arms. You will also need to cut two small circles out of a color of construction paper for the ears. I used dot stickers.

To make the mouse’s body, set the largest heart, pointed side up, on your work surface. Put some glue near the point. Grab the heart you cut out for the head and place it on the glue. Now quickly, before the glue on the head dries, put some glue on the back of the two arm hearts. Slip these into place on the mouse’s body by lifting up the edges of the mouse’s head. Smooth the head back down where it belongs, adding more glue if necessary.

To finish the mouse glue the two small circles onto the head heart (for the ears) and the wiggle eyes. Cut a small piece embroidery floss or yarn and separate the fibers a little bit. Put a dab of glue at the point of the head heart and lay the center of the embroidery floss or yarn onto the glue to look like the mouse’s whiskers. Glue a small pom-pom on top of the whiskers. To make a tail, glue a 6-inches long piece of yarn to the back of the mouse’s body.

Fun Friday: Penguin

Friday, February 17th, 2012

Here’s what we did for Fun Friday on February 3rd.

The Stories

PENQUIN’S BIG HILL BY Dana Regan

PENGUINS by Liz Pichon

The Songs and Fingerplays

SNOW
Snow on my forehead, snow on my knee.
Snow on my glasses, getting hard to see.
Snow on my winter boots.
Snow on my hair, snow on my ears.
Snow everywhere!

ITSY BITSY SNOWFLAKE
The itsy bitsy snowflake
Fell down from the sky.
It landed on my nose
And it bounced upon my eye.
It slid down my cheek,
And it landed on my tongue.
Then it melted all away.
My snowflake song is done!

Snowey Pokey
Sing to the tune of “Hokey Pokey”

You put your right mitten in, You take your right mitten out,
You put your right mitten in and you shake it all about.
You do the Snowey pokey and you turn yourself around.
That’s what it’s all about.

Additional verses: left mitten, scarf, right boot, left boot, hat

Crafts: Penguin

What you’ll need:

  • Black, white and orange paper
  • Glue stick
  • Googly eyes
  • Scissors

How to make your Oval Penguin Craft

Cut out a large egg shape from a sheet of black construction paper. This will be the penguin’s body.

Cut out a smaller circle from white construction paper for the penguin’s tummy. Glue the white circle to the black egg shape.

Cut out a smaller egg shape from black construction paper. Fold the egg shape in half lengthwise. Cut the egg shape in half to make the penguin’s wings.

Glue the wings to the back of the large black egg shape so that they stick out from behind the body.

Glue a pair of googly eyes to the top of the penguin’s body.

Cut out a small diamond shape from a sheet of orange construction paper. Fold the diamond in half to make two triangles. Glue the bottom triangle below the penguin’s eyes. The top half of the diamond will stick out. This will be the penguin’s beak.

Fold a sheet of orange construction paper in half. Cut out a food shape with three toes from the orange construction paper. Open the fold, and you will have two identically shaped feet. Glue the feet to the bottom of the penguin’s body.
