The Songs and Fingerplays

Ten Fingers
I have ten fingers hold up both hands, fingers spread
And they all belong to me, point to self
I can make them do things-
Would you like to see?

I can shut them up tight make fists
I can open them wide open hands
I can put them together place palms together
I can make them all hide put hands behind back

I can make them jump high hands over head
I can make them jump low touch floor
I can fold them up quietly fold hands in lap
And hold them just so.

Two Little Feet
Two little feet go stamp, stamp, stamp
Two little hands go clap, clap, clap
One little body stands up straight
One little body goes round and round
One little body sits quietly down.

The Mitten
Sing to the tune of “The Farmer in the Dell”

The mitten on the ground.
The mitten on the ground.
Heigh-ho! It’s cold outside.
The mitten on the ground.
The (mole) snuggles in.
The (mole) snuggles in.
Heigh-ho! It’s cold outside.
The (mole) snuggles in.

Repeat: Rabbit, Hedgehog, Owl, Badger, Fox, Bear, and Mouse. (After the mouse, pretend to sneeze and fall out of the mitten.)

Snowey Pokey
Sing to the tune of “Hokey Pokey”

You put your right mitten in, You take your right mitten out,
You put your right mitten in and you shake it all about.
You do the Snowey pokey and you turn yourself around.
That’s what it’s all about.

Additional verses: left mitten, scarf, right boot, left boot, hat

The Craft: Mitten

What you’ll need:

Construction paper

Hole punch

Scissors

crayons, makers, stickers, whatever you desire to decorate your mitten

Ribbon, yarn, or shoe string

Mitten pattern and color sheet with all the animals

How to make it:
Cut 2 large mitten shapes out of cardstock or a vinyl placemat. Punch holes around the outside of the mittens. Color or decorate the mittens. Use yarn or a shoe string to lace the mittens together.

Color and cut out the animal pictures. Use the mitten and animal pictures to retail the story.

The Craft: Candy Cane Felt Mouse

What you’ll need:

Felt; green and red

Wiggle eyes

Small red pom pom

How to make it:

Cut a 6″ by 3.5″ wide-tear drop shape.

Measure two inches from the tip of the nose towards the middle of the tear drop shape. Mark with a pencil on the under-side. From that point, place a ruler and measure in from each side one inch. On each side, make a one inch slit with your scissors.

Next, we will be making the ears. Cut a 5″ by 2″ strip of felt in a complimentary color. Round the edges and fold in half to make easy to insert. Take the folded piece and insert into one of the slits we previously made. Pull from the other slit until even on both sides. At this point, it should begin looking like a mouse.

Glue the wiggle eyes below the ears. After the eyes are placed, take your nose (pom-pom ) and glue onto the tip of the mouse.

Take a candy cane, with the straight end first, and slide into the pocket made on the under-side of the mouse. Turn back over and your mouse is now complete with a tasty, candy cane tail!

WALK LIKE A TURKEY
Walk like a turkey,
Waddle, waddle, waddle.
Talk like a turkey,
Gobble, gobble, gobble.
Run like a turkey
‘Round and ‘round.
But when it’s Thanksgiving
Don’t make a sound!

Gobble, Gobble (if you’re Happy & You Know It)
“Gobble, gobble, gobble, gobble”, says the bird-
Mr. Turkey gobble-gobbles

The Craft: Turkey Memo Holder

What you’ll need:

1 small red paper party plate

3 colored popsicle sticks

1 clothespin

1 heavy-duty magnet

2 small wiggle eyes

craft glue

scissors

red magic marker

How to make it:

Cut small the paper party plate into quarters.

Take 1 of the quarter-plates and cut slits about 1-inch apart along the edge of the plate, creating a coarse fringe.

Draw a nose at the top of the clothespin with the red magic marker (my nose looks like a backward “S”). Then glue the 2 wiggle eyes to each side of the nose.

Glue the clothespin to the center of the quarter-plate. Make sure the pinchy part is facing down, so it can be used to hang/display notes and art.

Cut each popsicle stick in half with heavy-duty scissors (I used kitchen shears), or break them in half and trim off splintery edges with regular scissors.

Glue the popsicle stick halves to the curved part of the plate in between the slits you cut earlier.

When the glue is completely dry, turn the plate over and glue a heavy-duty magnet to the back.

When the glue is completely dry, hang your craft on the fridge and use it to display Thanksgiving art and reminder notes.

The Songs and Fingerplays

All the Fish Are Swimming in the Water –
”Miss Jackie” Silberg
Hold your hands, palms together, and make swimming motions.
When saying “Bubble,” move your fingers together and apart.
Spray your fingers wide open as you say “SPLASH!”
All the fish are swimming in the water
Swimming in the water
Swimming in the water
All the fish are swimming in the water
Bubble, bubble, bubble, bubble…SPLASH!
Recite this verse in a slow, low voice, with large, exaggerated motions:
The great big fish is swimming in the water
Swimming in the water
Swimming in the water
The great big fish is swimming in the water
Bubble, bubble, bubble, bubble…SPLASH!
This verse is chanted in a high, squeaky voice, with little motions:
The little bitty fish are swimming in the water
Swimming in the water
Swimming in the water
The little bitty fish are swimming in the water
Bubble, bubble, bubble, bubble…SPLASH

Did You Ever See A Fishy? (Tune: Did You Ever See A Lassie?)
Did you ever see a fishy,
a fishy, a fishy?
Did you ever see a fishy
Swim this way and that?
Swim this way and that way
and that way and this way?
Did you ever see a fishy
Swim this way and that?
Repeat the song replacing “swim” with other verbs such as: slide, swish, and splash

Waves in the Sea

(To the Tune of: Wheels on the Bus)
The waves on the sea go up and down,
(raise and lower arms)
Up and down, up and down,
The waves on the sea go up and down
All day long
Additional Verses:
The shark in the sea goes snap snap snap..
(clap your hands)
The fish in the sea go swish swish swish..
(swish back and forth)
The boats in the sea go toot toot toot…
(make blowing horn motion)

What you’ll need:

TP roll

Popsicle stick

Muffin cup

Construction paper

Masking tape

Glue

Scissors

Markers

How to make it:

Cut 2 slits down your TP roll, opposite each other and about 2/3 down the roll (see picture).

Slide your popsicle stick into the slits. Wrap the top 1/3 of the roll with masking tape (to make the scarecrows face, and to keep the TP roll together).

Cut a strip of yellow construction paper about 5″ X 11/2″ big. Cut fringe at either end. Fold it to fit the top of the TP roll and glue on.

Once your Scarecrow’s hair is on go ahead and draw on a face and glue on your muffin cup hat. Add a little more color by cutting out small square patches for your Scarecrow.

If you’re doing this craft with preschoolers, make it easier by having the craft stick and masking tape in place and pre-cut the hair. They can glue on everything and make the Scarecrow’s face!
